All County A Football League Division 3 Round 8 : Monday 31st July 2017

Picture
Kilmainhamwood 2-8 Trim 5-20
In what can only be described as a daunting prospect, Kilmainhamwood who are rooted to the foot of division three went to face the now promoted Trim in what was always a huge miss match.

Powered by county star Alan Douglas at mid-field, Trim were quick of the mark and able to score on most attacks as their mid-field, half-backs and half-forwards moved in tandem, which was reminiscent of the flying columns which were first described in Sun Tzu’s “The art of war”. Outmanned, outnumbered and outclassed, Kilmainhamwood attempted to dig deep and scrap for every ball. This was admirable from the Wood men who were in a similar position to the ancient Greek myth about “Sisiphus” who was forced each day to roll a bolder to the top of a hill, only to see it roll back down due to its own weight once it gets there. Once the ball was cleared down the field, Trim seemed to be on the attack again just moments later

In the second half, the Wood were able to get a better foothold in the game and Harry Corbally and Emmet Clarke both caught plenty of ball in the middle of the field and both scored fine goals which improved the situation for the North Meath men.

It has been a disappointing and frustrating year for the Wood, but heads cannot be dropped and the fight must continue.

Kilmainhamwood: Padraig Carolan, Richard Corbally, Padraic Barber, Jude Collins, Cathal Bennet, Andy Farrelly, Bennard Reilly, Harry Corbally, Emmet Clarke, Peter Flood, Michael Shankey, Damian Russell, David Russell, Paddy Carolan, Paul Carolan. Subs Emmett Roche for Peter Flood, Steven Smith for Cathal Bennett

All County A Football League Division 3 Round 10 : Sunday 2nd July 2017

Picture
Kilmainhamwood 1-10 : 2-17 Bective
Kilmainhamwood played some good football on a sunny Sunday morning in July, but were ultimately outplayed by an impressive Bective side that demonstrated various strategies of attack to great effect.

It was the North Meath men who got off to the better start after two very impressive points each by Micheal Shankey and Steven Kiernan left Kilmainhamwood 4 points to 2 in front after ten minutes. However Bective increased the tempo greatly and started kicking points for fun. Bective put the game to bed after 20 minutes with two quick goals, the first which was scrappily deflected into the net, while the other was punched home after a fine team move.

The Wood however did not give up with players such as Paddy Carolan, Paul Carolan and Harry Corbally battling hard. The Wood were rewarded with a goal, ten minutes into the second half after Paddy Carolan slotted the ball into the back of the net. There were some fine scores from Paul Carolan and Aidan Crosby kept the score board ticking over. However Bective maintained a commanding lead and were able to maintain this by kicking the odd score.

The big blow to Kilmainhamwood may have come from a non-contact injury to half-back Ronald Owens. Owens has had break out season and has become a big part of the team due to his fighting spirit and never say die attitude. He will hopefully not be on the sidelines for too long with his ankle injury.

Kilmainhamwood have had a disappointing league campaign, largely due to being ravaged by injuries, but their form has been better of late and all focus will now be on the championship game with Moylaigh.

Kilmainhamwood: Damian Russell, Richard Corbally, Padraig Barber, Cathal Bennet, Alan Carolan, Emmet Clark, Ronald Owens, Harry Corbally, Gary Yorke, Paul Carolan(0-1), Micheal Shankey(0-2), Andy Farrelly, Steven Kiernan (0-3), Paddy Carolan (1-1), David Russell (0-2). Subs- Aidan Crosby (0-1), Damian Farrelly

All County A Football League Division 3 Round 9 : Wednesday 14th June 2017

Picture
Kilmainhamwood 0-14 :1-15 St Ultan's
Kilmainhamwood missed a chance to scrape their way out of relegation after they lost a tough contest against St Ultans in Sean Newman park on Wednesday evening.

The Wood who were missing some of their first team players, were terribly flat footed in the opening 10 minutes as the Ultans raced into a 1-4 to zero lead and looked as if they were going to cruise to a comfortable victory. However the Wood didn't give up easy and points from Michael Shankey, David Russell and Stephen Kiernan (inset) got the Wood back into the game. However playing against a strong breeze in the first half it was never going to be easy. Before half time the Ultans lead by 1-9 to 0-4 and Kilmainhamwood squandered two good goal chances. The game looked as it might get even more bleak for the north Meath men when St Ultans we're awarded a penalty on the stroke of half time. Damian Russell however made a fantastic stop as he dived down low to palm the ball by the post.

The Wood started the second half strong as Paddy Carolan kicked some fine scores and also linked well with Micheal Shankey who was on fine scoring form. The Ultans however with their eight point halftime advantage were happy to keep the scoreboard thinking over and generally held a 6 point advantage. With 12 minutes to go the Wood were given a lifeline as the Ultans were reduced to 14 after a second bookable offence

More scores from Alan Carolan and Paddy Carolan saw the lead shrink to just four points between the sides with five minutes to play. However Kilmainhamwood continued to blast balls into the full forward line despite the fact St Ultans had clearly packed their defence with men at the back and the gap was not closed any further.

In the end the St Ultans held on. Best for Kilmainhamwood were Damian Russell in goals, Padraig Barber in defence and Michael Shankey in attack.

Kilmainhamwood - Damian Russell, Richard Corbally, Padraig Barber, Jude Collins, Damian Farrelly, Emmet Clark, Alan Carolan(0-1), Harry Corbally, Gary Yorke, Luke Owens, Michael Shankey (0-5), Paul Carolan, David Russell(0-1), Paddy Carolan(0-3), Steven Kiernan (0-4). Subs, Cathal Bennet for Luke Owens

All County A Football League Division 3 Round 7 : Friday 28th April 2017

Picture
Kilmainhamwood 0-15 : 3-17 Oldcastle

Kilmainhamwood have an injury list that is starting to resemble the injury list after the battle of the Somme rather than 6 rounds of league games.

After a demoralising loss to Dunsany, the Wood looked to be up against a daunting task as they faced Oldcastle. But to their credit, the Wood fought very hard and the ten-point loss was flattering for Oldcastle.

The game started out very close, both teams deployed a sweeper and there were numerous balls turned over in the first 10 minutes. Oldcastle lead by 3-1 thanks to some excellent long range frees from their free taker.
The game took a turn after 15 minutes when a long range free was bundled into the goals after the Wood failed to deal with it.

Soon after a speculative long ball from Oldcastle was palmed over the keeper Padraig Carolan and Oldcastle found themselves eight points in front. Kilmainhamwood started to attack more and were caught on the counter for a third goal soon after. Despite not dominating, Oldcastle found themselves a long way in front at the break as they lead 3-6 to 0-5.

The Wood did not drop their heads and continued to fight hard. Some excellent scores in the second David Russell and Aidan Crosbie (inset) helped keep the score board ticking over.

The second half finished 10 points apiece and the game finished 3-16 to 0-15 in favour of Oldcastle.

Best for the Wood were Harry Corbally and Ronald Owens in defence and Aidan Crosbie in attack.

Padraig Carolan, Richard Corbally, Padraic Barber, Jude Collins, Bernard Reilly, Harry Corbally (0-1), Ronald Owens. Shane Clarke, Gary Yorke, Damien Russell (0-1), David Russell (0-4), Ryan Gillespie, Alan Carolan (0-1), Paddy Carolan (0-1), Michael Shankey (0-1)

All County A Football League Division 3 Round 5 : Sunday 9th April 2017

Picture
Kilmainhamwood 1-4 : 1-11 Kilmainham

Kilmainhamwood battled hard against Kilmainham on Sunday 9th April 2017 in the division three league game, but in the end, were unable to squeeze out a result.

The Wood were missing several key forwards and it showed as they failed to ever hit proper rhythm and miss placed many passes which ended possible scoring opportunities. The first half was largely controlled by Kilmainham as wave after wave of attacks were centred around Michael Newman at full forward. Too his credit, the Woods full back Padraic Barber kept Newman under persistent pressure and held his own while Philip Moran swept up dozens of balls to kill attacks. Goalkeeper Padraig Carolan also helped keep the score down with two excellent saves in the first half. The Wood only kicked two scores in the first half, but they were excellent scores from Paddy Carolan and David Russell. The halftime score was 6 points to 2 in favour of Kilmainham and still all to play for.

Both teams traded early points as a Kilmainham free was cancelled out by a point from Sean Mulligan (inset) for the Wood. However, Kilmainham started to control the game for the next fifteen minutes kicking another three scores, leaving the score 10 points to 3 with roughly eight minutes to play. Once again though the Wood showed a never say die attitude and Ryan Gillespie rifled a free kick off the top of the cross bar and into the net which the nine Kilmainham men in the goals barely even seen as it whizzed over their heads. From the following kick-out the Wood worked another score from Paddy Carolan to leave just three between the sides with five minutes to play.

The Wood were now in all-out attack mode and looked more dangerous than they did at any point in the game. However, Kilmainham were able to counter attack and after a wayward shoot feel into the arms of a Kilmainham player, he was brought down for a penalty, which they converted to kill off the game. Kilmainham added one more point to leave them with a seven-point victory.

Best for Kilmainhamwood were Padraig Carolan in goals and Padraic Barber and Philip Moran in defence.

Padraig Carolan, Richard Corbally, Padraic Barber, Philip Moran, Ronald Owens, Emmet Clark, Cathal Bennet, Harry Corbally, Paddy Carolan, Luke Owens, Ryan Gillespie, Jude Collins, David Russell, Sean Mulligan, Damien Russell

Subs: Andy Farrelly for Luke Owens, Alan Carolan for Ronald Owens, Bernard Reilly for Emmet Clark, Aiden Crosby for Damien Russell.

All County A Football League Division 3 Round 4 : Saturday 25th March 2017

Picture
St Vincent's 2-9 : 3-6 Kilmainhamwood

With five minutes left it did not look like the Woods day as they were six points behind and down to 14 men, but an astonishing come back left the Vincent’s needing a last-second equaliser.

The game resembled something close to former Ajax coach Rinus Michels notion of total football as both teams went all out attack throughout the entire game with goal chances galore.

St. Vincent’s looked totally in control in the first fifteen minutes as they took a five points to one lead with Paul Carolan’s point being the only bright spot for the north Meath men. But after some good work between David Russell (inset) to find Paddy Carolan, the ball was scrambled over the line to cut the lead before a David Russell point leveled the game two minutes later. Michael Shankey put the Wood in front soon after with a good point and the Wood now looked in control with some fine moves. David Russell had a goal disallowed for over carrying it before a miraculous save from a St Vincent’s defender saved what looked to be a certain goal soon after. But again, the momentum switched as the Vincent’s first leveled the scores with a point before an excellent goal before half-time left them three points to the good. A late Ryan Gillespie free left two between the sides at the break.

Gary Yorke was introduced at half time and he was made to work hard as the Vincent’s once again began to control the game. They had a goal disallowed for over carrying and were denied more goals thanks to some excellent saves from Damien Russell. However, they did finally break through after a high ball was not dealt with and the ball was poked home from close range to leave St Vincent’s five points to the good. The game became more physical as some big hits were put in before Kilmainhamwood were reduced to 14 men. The game looked all but over before substitutes Steven Kiernan and Emmet Clark swung the pendulum back in the Woods favour. A Kiernan free kick hit the post and Paul Carolan was first to react before he was dragged down for a penalty. Kiernan netted the resulting penalty to leave three between the sides. From the next kick-out Emmet Clark won a free which Kiernan kicked over. Going into injury time a Paul Carolan side-line was pumped into the square and Gary Yorke rose highest to win the ball and rifle the ball into the back of the net to leave the Wood amazingly a point to the good.

St Vincent’s worked the ball down the pitch to earn a late equaliser which left the spectators gasping for breath in what was a truly entertaining game.

Best for the Wood were Padraic Barber in defence, Gary Yorke in Mid-field and Paul Carolan in attack.

Damien Russell, Jude Collins, Padraic Barber, Cathal Bennett, Philip Moran, Andy Farrelly, Ronald Owens, Harry Corbally, Shane Clark, Luke Owens, Michael Shankey (0-1), Paul Carolan(0-1), Ryan Gillespie (0-1), Paddy Carolan (1-1), David Russell (0-1).

Subs: Gary Yorke (1-0) for Shane Clark, Steven Kiernan (1-1) for Luke Owens, Emmet Clark for Andy Farrelly, Richard Corbally for Cathal Bennett

Kilmainhamwood 2-6 Drumbaragh 1-11

Kilmainhamwood and Drumbaragh contested a hard fought game in Division 3 of the league.

Kilmainhamwood played with the wind in the first half and started of brightly with Paul Carolan kicking the opening score. Ten minutes into the first half a Ryan Gillespie free fell short and was punched into the net by Paul Carolan after the Drumbaragh keeper failed to deal with it.

Drumbaragh came back strong after that kicking the next three scores before two fine scores from David Russel left the wood a goal to the good after 25 minutes. Drumbaragh however scored a well worked goal soon after and a point before the hard-working David Russell kicked another point to leave the sides level at 1-4 apiece at the break.

Drumbaragh looked to be in command with a strong wind at the start of the second half and kicked the opening score. The Wood however took the lead soon after as a long ball into David Russell spilled onto the ground before Russell doing his best Neymar impersonation, dribbled the ball around the full back and the keeper before kicking the ball into an empty net.

Drumbaragh made good use of the wind and kicked the next three points to lead by 1 with ten minutes to play. Peter Kieran's was unlucky not to equalise as he hit the post before a Ryan Gillespie free left the sides level again. Two good scores from Drumbaragh left them in good position before Paddy Carolan's point left just one between the sides going into injury time. However Drumbaragh played a possession game and worked a point with the last kick of the game to win by two.

All County A Football League Division 3 Round 2 : Saturday 25th February 2017

Picture
Kilmainhamwood 2-2 Clann Na nGael 0-14

On a wet and windy day on a field which resembled something close to a mud run obstacle course, Clann na nGael overcame Kilmainhamwood in a closely contested match.

The first half was scrappy with both teams making numerous mistakes due to the poor conditions. Clann na nGeal took a two-point lead mid-way through the first half before Ryan Gillespie making his league debut kicked the Woods first point with an excellent free. After twenty minutes the Wood were dealt a double blow as Paul Carolan was given a blacked card and Steven Kiernan had to leave the field with an injury. Clann na nGeal scored another two points before a second Ryan Gillespie free left the score 4 points to 2 in favour of Clann na nGeal at the break.

The Wood started the second half brightly after a substitute Darragh McGrevey set up Ryan Gillespie to rifle the ball to the back of the net. Two minutes later a long ball into the square was punched into the goals by Ryan Gillespie to give the Wood a 4-point lead ten minutes into the second half. Unfortunately, this would be the final score of the game for the Wood, as Clann na nGeal started to dominate against a Kilmainhamwood side which were struggling to overcome their mounting number of injuries. The men from Athboy and Rathcairn kicked ten points in a row to edge out what was a very hard fought game between the two sides.

Best for Kilmainhamwood were Ryan Gillespie in the forwards, Harry Corbally at midfield and Andy Farrelly in defence.

Kilmainhamwood 3-12 St Brigid's 1-10

Kilmainhamwood got off to the best possible start to their new league campaign with an eight-point victory away from home over St Brigid's.

The Wood took three points to one lead early on with some exquisite points from Steven Kiernan (inset) and David Russell. Kiernan scored the Woods first goal punching the ball passed the Brigid's keeper after an excellent pass from Paul Carolan. The Wood continued to dominate the half with some superb scores from Paddy Carolan and Paul Carolan before David Russell rattled the net with a superb low finish. The Brigid's scored an excellent goal soon after but also saw themselves reduced to fourteen men after a kick on Micheal Shankey left the wood man grimacing in pain. The first half ended with Kilmainhamwood leading 2-9 to 1-6

Playing against the wind in the second half the Wood showed good defensive composer as Andy Farrelly intercepted ball after ball in defence and Harry Corbally dictated the play around the centre of the field.
