JAFC Group B Rd 5 : Monday 14th August 2017 vs. Dunsany

Picture
Wood you believe it!

Kilmainhamwood 1-10 : 0-10 Dunsany

In perhaps the biggest shock result in the championship so far, Kilmainhamwood defeated Dunsany by a gaol in Carlanstown on Monday the 14th of August. The Woods manager was unable to make the game due to work commitments and a game plan was made on the fly two minutes before throw-in in a movement of player power reminiscent of the 2011 French rugby world cup team. The Wood had lost in the league to Dunsany of a score line of 2-27 to 1-3 in one of the clubs worst ever defeats, so a sweeper was to be deployed in the form of Michael Shankey while wing-forward Paul Carolan would also track back for much of the game.

The tactic got off to an instant success as some short hand passing lead to an excellent opening score from Midfielder Harry Corbally. The Wood continued to dominate as their defence forced Dunsany into turnovers and frees one by the forwards lead to two Steven Kiernan frees which put the Wood three points to nothing in the lead. Dunsany took got their opening score ten minutes in from a free and the teams began to trade point for point as patient forward play saw Alan Carolan point a long-distance shot, while David Russell finished of two other fine moves for scores. Steven Kiernan kicked another free before Dunsany kicked their final free before half-time to leave the Wood 0-7 to 0-4 up at the break.

The second half got off to a scrappy start as a Kiernan free was cancelled out by a Dunsany free. The game started to become increasingly bad tempered and a very late and dangerous tackle reduced Dunsany down to 14 but Kilmainhamwoods best player on the night Michael Shankey limping for the rest of the game. There were many breaks in play as both teams became heavy legged but Dunsany started to slowly etch their way back with a score every few minutes until they lead with seven minutes to go by ten points to eight and the Wood also saw their captain black carded on what looked like a harshly awarded free kick. However this would be as good as it got for Dunsany and a long ball into the forwards was flicked on by Paddy Carolan before Damian Russell finished the ball soccer style by the keeper to put the Wood back in front with five minutes to go. The Wood had most of their team back at this stage but every time they won the ball they kept good possession and wing-back Cathal Bennet stormed up the pitch to put two between them late on. Steven Kiernan kicked his first point from pay late on to leave three between the sides and Dunsany were unable to mount another come.

The result means the Wood finish fourth in the group and avoid relegation while Dunsany still qualify. However, in terms of being a confidence booster for the North Meath men, it felt crucial for in terms of giving self-belief for a team that has been under a lot of pressure for the entire year.

Best for the Wood was Michael Shankey and CathaL bennet in defence and Damian Russell up front, but in truth any of the 16 players who played on the night could have been given this accolade.

Padraig Carolan, Richard Corbally, Padraic Barber, Philip Moran, Alan Carolan (0-1), Emmett Clarke, Cathal Bennett (0-1), Harry Corbally (0-1), Gary Yorke, Paul Carolan, Michael Shankey, Damian Russell (1-0), David Russell (0-2), Paddy Carolan, Steven Kiernan (0-5). Subs Andy Farrelly for Emmett Clarke

Kilmainhamwood 0-12 St Brigids 0-10
Kilmainhamwood eked out a crucial victory in what was a tense and hard fought game in which bought sides knew they would be facing a relegation battle with a loss.

St Brigids started the game off much brighter as they moved the ball very well and kicked off into a three points to nothing lead. Kilmainhamwoods first point came from Paul Carolan before the Brigids once again increased the lead to three after a fine attempt from a free. Micheal Shankey kicked a good score to shorten the gap to two before an off the ball altercation left both sides down to 14 men. Paddy Carolan kicked the final point for the wood before half-time as the Brigids went in 6 points to 4 in the lead.

The Wood started off much brighter at the start of the second half as points from Paddy Carolan and David Russell left the sides level for the first time in the game. The two teams traded points, leaving the sides 8 points apiece after 15 into the second half. The Wood had a guilt edge goal chance which was wasted after some miss timed hand passes left the Brigids able to clear their lines. Captain Emmet Clark put some day light between with what can only be described as an inspirational point as he ran the length of the field giving one-twos before kicking the ball over the bar from thirty yards.

Steven Kiernan put three between the sides after a free kick, however the Wood were unable to seal off the game after they wasted two good goal chances before the Brigids reduced the score to just two points. Gary Yorke scored an excellent 45 to stretch the lead only to see St Brigids once again to reduce the lead to just two points. Minutes later a high ball was sent into the square which was excellently dealt with by Damian Russell who had a superb game as he kicked started numerous attacks for the men in blue and white as he caught shots which fell short.

Substitute Aidan Crosby kicked a booming shot from 45 five yards out, which is ironically the same number as his age, to stretch the lead to three again. Crosby may not be a household name in Meath, but there are very few players with as distinguished of a career or who have shown more loyalty to their club as Crosby has.
The Brigids kicked one more point in injury time but the Wood held out for a win which leaves them with some breathing space in the relegation fight and an outside chance of qualifying for the quarter finals if they can win their final two group games.

Best for Wood were Damian Russell in gaols, Emmet Clark in defence and Michael Shankey in attack.

Kilmainhamwood: Damian Russell, Jude Collins, Padraig Barber, Philip Moran, Ronald Owens, Emmet Clark(0-1), Alan Carolan, Harry Corablly, Gary Yorke (0-1), Richard Corbally, Michael Shankey (0-2), Paul Carolan (0-2), David Russell (0-2), Paddy Carolan (0-2), Steven Kiernan (0-1). Subs. Cathal Bennet, Andy Farrelly, Aidan Crosby (0-1)

Kilmainhamwood 1-11 Carnaross 3-8

Kilmainhamwood were seriously unlucky not to get their first points of the 2017 Junior championship after they dominated for large portions but were continuously sucker punched by goals on the counter attack.

The Wood had a strong wind in the first half but after being disposed in mid-field, Carnaross broke quickly and worked the ball well for a fine goal in the opening minute. Steven Kiernan who has missed most of the season with an ankle injury was back fully fit and he proved to be an enormous addition as he gave a masterclass in free taking in the first half.

Kilmainhamwood worked hard and caused Carnaross problems throughout the field as Paul Carolan won plenty of frees in front of goal and Gary Yorke dominated the middle of the park. Mid-way through the first half the Wood lead by 5 points to 1-1 but a second goal on the counter attack left the North Meath men baffled as to how they were two points down despite controlling so much of the game. To their credit they did not drop the heads and Stephen Kiernan worked the ball well to Harry Corbally who struck the ball sweetly to score a point from well beyond the 45 yard line. Both teams battled hard for the remainder of the half and Carnaross went into the break leading by the minimum with a score line of 2-3 to 0-8.

Carnaross started of brightly in the second half as they scored several points and took a five-point lead after the opening ten minutes. Mid-way through the second half the game looked to be fizzling out as a contest and Keeper Padraig Carolan had to be taken off after what looked like a suspected collarbone injury. The Wood made some changes and moving Paddy Carolan into full forward paid of quickly. The long ball into Carolan caused problems for Carnaross and he managed to grab a ball before blasting it over the bar with his first attempt while minutes later he caught another and buried it into the corner of the net to leave just a point between the sides and the Wood looking menacing.

However for the third time in the game, Kilmainhamwoods marking seemed to ease up and Carnaross moved the ball quickly down the field to score a third goal which was disheartening after the Woods hard fight back. The Wood continued to fight on and points from Paddy Carolan and Stephen Kiernan left just three between the sides going into injury time. The last few minutes saw almost both entire teams camped in the Carnaross penalty area and the men in Red and Yellow just about hung on for the win.

Kilmainhamwood though must look to this as their best performance of the year and one that might instil hope for the rest of their campaign. Best for the Wood were Gary Yorke in midfield and Steven Kiernan and Paddy Carolan in the forwards.

Kilmainhamwood: Padraig Carolan, Jude Collins (inset), Padriac Barber, Philip Moran, Alan Carolan, Emmet Clark, Ronald Owens, Paddy Carolan(1-2), Gary Yorke, Damian Russell, Harry Corbally(0-1), David Russell, Stephen Kiernan(0-9), Michael Shankey, Paul Carolan. Aidan Crosby for Damian Russell, Cathal Bennet for Ronald Owens, Damian Russell for Padraig Carolan.

JFCA Group B Round 1 : Friday 19th May 2017

Picture
Kilmainhamwood 0-7 : 1-12 St. Vincent’s

Kilmainhamwood suffered a first-round championship defeat at the hands of St Vincent’s in Rathkenny on Friday the 19th of May.

The first half started off evenly as both sides traded scores while also missing some guilt edge chances. The halftime score saw the Wood a point down and well in contention to win the game.

However it was St Vincents who kicked on in the second half and two early points set some breathing space between the sides. A shot from a St Vincents forward looked as if it would fall into Kilmainhamwood’s keeper Padraig Carolan’s arms but, it was punched over his head at the last second which proved to be the decisive score in the match.

The game got heated late on as linesmen who had to be provided by the two teams involved in the game made partisan decisions which enraged both sides on what were clearly incorrect side line balls. Both sets of crowds also complained that there was no scoreboard which left it difficult to know who was winning for much of the game. Considering the 10€ cost of entry, championship facilities should provide a certain level of professionalism before getting the honour to host championship football games.

In the end St Vincents ran out comfortable and deserved winners.

Best for Kilmainhamwood were Philip Moran in defence and David Russell in attack.

Team: Padraig Carolan, Philip Moran, Padraic Barber, Richard Corbally, Harry Corbally, Emmet Clarke, Ronald Owens, Paddy Carolan, Gary Yorke, Alan Carolan, Michael Shankey, Damian Russell, Paul Carolan, Shane Clark, David Russell
