JFCA Group B Rd 5 : Saturday 25th August 2018 vs. Cortown
Kilmainhamwood 2-10 Cortown 0-11
Kilmainhamwood earned their first and vital win of the championship when they defeated Cortown in Nobber on Saturday.
The grass was long and the pitch was somewhat wet which made for a slower pace than most championship summer matches. The Wood started off well with a free from Steven Kiernan and then another from Ryan Gillespie which gave them a two point lead, before Cortown quickly quickly pegged them back with two good points. The Wood then seriously started to dominate after a long range free from Kiernan and a good point from play David Russell got the Wood back in front, before a long ball in from Micheal Shankey was met with a fist from David Russell who got to it just before the on rushing keeper to clip it into the net.
Cortwon to their credit did not lie down after going down by five, they dominated the last ten minutes of the half with five good points including one which was tipped over the bar with a brilliant save from Damian Russell. The sides were level at the half 1-4 to 7 points.
The second half started just as the first half ended with Cortown dominating preceding's and scoring the opening three points while also kicking some wasteful wides. The Wood then got back into it with a score from David Russell and another free from Kiernan. With probably ten minutes to go the Wood were a point down and looked in trouble. At this point Midfielders Harry Corbally and Gary Yorke started to dominate the center. Micheal Shankey went down with a sore ankle and whatever the magic sponge did to it, he seemed to play better after the injury as he kicked two excellent scores to nudge the Wood in front. The introduction of Páidí Owens gave the Wood a much more potent threat up front as his ball winning and vision gave the Wood the spark they needed. It was Owens who found Paddy Carolan with a fist pass before he weaved between two defenders and shot low into the corner of the net. The goal largely ended the game but two scores from Paul Carolan and Steven Kiernan meant the Wood ran out five point winners. The game finished in bizarre fashion as Paddy Carolan who had previously scored a great goal was teeded up for a second goal, before the Cortown keeper seemed to move to the other side of the goal, giving Paddy an open goal to shoot at which he somehow managed to kick wide.
The win means that the Wood stay in Junior A while Cortown's faith is still unknown.
Best for the Wood were Alan Carolan and Andy Farrelly in defence, Harry and Gary in Midfield and Páidí Owens in attack.
Kilmainhamwood team and scorers: Damian Russell, Jude Collins, Padraig Barber, Philip Moran, Alan Carolan, Andy Farrelly, Cathal Bennett, Harry Corbally, Gary Yorke, Paul Carolan (0-1), Michael Shankey (0-2), David Russell (1-2), Paddy Carolan (1-0), Steven Kiernan (0-4), Ryan Gillespie (0-1). JFCA Group B Rd 3 : Friday 10th August 2018 vs. Dunsany

Kilmainhamwood 1-10 Dunsany 3-10
In a familiar story of this season, once again Kilmainhamwood came out narrow losers after a good performance. Dunsany started off strong in the first ten minutes and dominated all parts of the game. But the Woods defense fought extremely hard and turned over lots of ball with David Carolan, Padraic Barber and Cathel Bennett putting their bodies on the line.
Dunsany did go three points to zero up but a good ball from Harry Corbally found Paddy Carolan on the square who laid it off to David Russell who calmly slotted it into the corner of the net. An excellent point moments later from Russell had the Wood amazingly in front despite being on the back foot for almost 15 minutes. The game became much more even after this after Gary Yorke and Emmet Clarke grew into midfield. Both teams traded points for the remainder of the half with scores from Micheal Shankey, two from Steven Kiernan (inset) and another from Russll leaving the Wood a point in front at the half at 1-5 to 0-7.
Dunsany started off bright again scoring a point as soon as the ball was thrown up. A punched goal soon after left Dunsany three in front. But the Wood fought back and some Steven Kiernan frees kept them in touch. A long distance point from Micheal Shankey saw the sides level with 10 minutes to play. Dunsany took the lead after a dubious line ball was given their way and with five minutes to go a rush of blood to the head from the Woods keeper saw Dunsany awarded a penalty. It was cooley slotted home and left the Wood 4 down with five to play. A Steven Kiernan point left three between the sides and soon after Emmet Clarke made an excellent run on goal which was snuffed out at the very end.
A long range free which was not dealt with in the Kilmainhamwood area ended up dropping into the net and this finished the game off as a contest.
Best for the Wood was David Russell in the Forwards and David Carolan in the backs.
Next up for the Wood is Cortown in a relegation survival match.

JFCA Group B Rd 2 : Sunday 22nd April 2018 vs. Moynalty

Kilmainhamwood 0-8 : 1-14 Moynalty
Kilmainhamwood put in a hard shift against Moynalty in the second round of the championship in Nobber, but were unable to see the game through after going toe to toe for the first 45 minutes.
The Wood started off brightly and set the intensity with a brilliant point from Paddy Carolan and a good free from Stephen Kiernan (inset). Moynalty however leveled the scoring after ten minutes with two good points of their own. The Wood kept the pressure up Carolan and Kiernan were again the scorers. The Wood had two injuries to Conor Kiernan and Peter Flood which saw the introduction to Alan Carolan and Cathal Bennett mid way through the first half. The game ebbed and flowed before the break and a Stephen Kiernan point looked like it would put the Wood a point up at the half but a late Moynalty score saw the sides level at 5-5 at half time.
The second half started similar to the first with Moynalty getting the first score before an incredible Kiernan free leveled things up. Moynalty scores another before a weaving run from Andy Farrelly saw him run through the defense for a score. Paddy Carolan then scored another point to see the Wood go one in front but unfortunately this was as good as it got for the men in white and blue.
Moynalty finished the last fifteen minutes with 1-7 without reply. The Wood seemed to run out of steam and were unable to keep the intensity up which had saw them play some very good football at times.
Best for the Wood was Andy Farrelly, Paddy Carolan and Stephen Kiernan.
