Kilmainhamwood GFC : JFC D Presentation 2013

Kilmainhamwood GFC : Junior D champions 2014

Kilmainhamwood GFC vs. Dunshaughlin : JFC D : Sun 28th April 2013

Picture
Kilmainhamwood GFC played Dunshaughlin in their second game of the 2013 JFC D on Sunday 28th April 2013 in the scenic setting that is Kilberry and came away with a well-deserved hard-earned one point victory.

Nicknamed “The Galácticos” this team can boast many SFC, IFC, Feis Cup & Division One medals and with man-mountain captain-marvel Tommy Owens leading this no-expense-spared squad the buzz is hitting the streets that something special is brewing.

The early exchanges were even enough and when Dunshaughlin launched a speculative effort towards the Kilmainhamwood goal it was nothing more than that, speculative. Unfortunately the wind caught it and it ended up in the back of the onion bag much to the dismay of the Kilmainhamwood team & supporters. Despite the early set-back this body of men proceeded unfazed. Conor Kiernan started to get a grip at midfield and fellow centre field man Aidan Crosbie was unlucky to see his initial effort drift wide. However, the veteran midfielder made no mistake from his second effort, following good showing from nearly-as-equally-veteran full forward Colm Gilcreest, and The Wood were off the mark and on the board and up and running. Indeed it was the wily full forward Gilcreest that registered the next two points following good work from Damien Russell and the now-all-too-familiar-series-of-dummies from Giller as Kilmainhamwood drew level 0:03 to 1:00. Midway through the opening period and management called for the big guns as Larry McCormack was sprung from the bench and the nippy forward had an immediately impact. He latched onto a fine through ball and feed it to captain Tommy Owens who, after his customary bounce (which he is entitled to) , elegantly guided it onto Colm Gilcreest who was hacked down and, as the referee slowly made his reluctant way from the middle of the field to come up to where the play was happening it became clear he was going to award a “peno”. Tommy Owens as captain handed responsibility to Damien Russell who dispatched her with ease to the bottom left hand corner as you look at it. Dunshaughlin rallied and scored a fine point to leave it 1:03 to 1:01 going into the final stages of the half. Colm Gilcreest was proving the torn in the Dunshaughlin side and after good work from Francis Owens on the 40, Giller was on-cue and potted another long range effort. Larry McCormack was involved is all things good about the Kilmainhamwood play and was fouled as half time approached. Aidan Crosbie slotted over the resultant free to leave The ‘Wood with a 1:05 to 1:02 half time lead.

Damien Cunningham was introduced at the break to sure up the defence and renewed his partnership with rock solid Stephen Smith at fullback. Conor Kiernan was on the end of a wonderful move involving Larry McCormack, David Dolan and Jude Collins. Minutes into the second half and the K-wood management team played their final and trump card when Ray “Razor” Madden was sprung from the bench … he was late for the match because he was baby-sitting (I know, I can’t believe it either). However, Ray is no baby-sitter on the pitch and was quickly into the action hitting the top of the post from an acute angel and was aware enough to follow it in and collect the rebound before being unceremoniously hauled to the ground … but the referee didn’t see it because he was in his 10 meter square in the middle of the field. Aidan Crosbie scored from a free following good play from Giller & Larry. There then followed the most bizarre incident in the match when Tommy Owens inexplicably hand passed into the Dunshaughlin net from only a few yards out. The rationale later given was that if he had shot for goal and the goalie saved it that would have provided an enormous lift to the opposition so he decided otherwise … up there for thinking, down there for dancing. With the score at 1:07 to 1:04 in favour of Kilmainhamwood things were looking good and lesser men would have thought they were home & hosed. However Dunshaughlin were not done yet and rattled off three points in quick succession to level proceeding. We were in squeaky bum territory and the move of the match involving David Dolan close the side-line, Jude Collins and Colm Gilcreest resulted in a 35 meter free. Captain marvel Tommy Owens handed responsibility to Aidan Crosbie who split the posts with plenty to spare to give Kilmainhamwood a deserved 1:08 to 1:07 victory.

Kilmainhamwood GFC JFC D vs. Bective : Sun 21st April 2013

Picture
Captain Marvel Tommy Owens lead his Kilmainhamwood GFC medal-laden (from yesteryear)  troops to victory when he coolly pointed to seal a well-deserved 2:07 to 0:12 victory.

The ‘Wood lined out with many of the stars that this great club was built on in the 90’s and with Tommy Owens at the helm, they set about their task. Bective opened the brighter and took an early lead when their full-forward enjoyed some early possession before experienced full-back Stephen Smith battened down the hatches to have a solid game at the heart of the defence. Former Meath star Ray Magee settled the Kilmainhamwood nerves on 5 minutes when he converted a free following a good work from Damien Farrelly. On seven minutes Damien Russell finished off a lovely move following a barn-storming run from wing-back Ronnie Owens who rolled through the Bective defence like an 18-wheeler. Ray Magee converted the first of two penalties after Tommy Owens had set his sights and was about to unload before being hauled to the ground in a last ditch attempt to stop the maestro from burying her. Colm Gilcreest was introduced after 20 minutes for Benny Reilly and immediately showed he hadn’t lost it with a display of the customary dummies … some even fooling himself. The K-wood forwards where beginning to click with Francis Owens pulling the strings in the 40 and Ray Magee, Damien Russell and The Tommy showing for every ball. This lively play yielded another penalty which was duly dispatched by the ice-cool Ray Smoothie Magee. Jude Collins at centre-back and Aidan Crosbie at mid-field provided the launch pad for the lively forwards. As the half drew to a close another legend from a bi-gone era was introduced as the unmistakeable Larry McCormack replaced Damien Farrelly. At the half the scoreboard favoured Kilmainhamwood as it read 2:02 vs. 0:05

Bective to their credit came storming out of the blocks in the second half and notched up four quick points to take the lead. However, the Kilmainhamwood men did not panic and with Aidan Crosbie getting a stronghold at midfield and Larry McCormack now prominent in attack the ‘Wood soon rattled off a few scores of their own. Ray Magee pointed from dead balls following great work from Tommy Owens, Colm Gilcreest, Francis Owens and Conor Kiernan. Gary Yorke was introduced for Ronnie Owens and David Dolan replaced Philip Reilly as the game was in the melting pot. Bective score three points in a row to take the lead before a Ray Magee free levelled the match with a few minutes remaining

Cometh the hour cometh the man … when Kilmainhamwood needed their captain Tommy Owens, up he stood. Aidan Crosbie secured the ball in the middle of the field and an intricate move involving Larry McCormack, Francis Owens, Colm Gilcreest, found its way to Smoothie who knew the man for the job was ahead of his. Smoothie past the ball onto Tommy Owens and time stood still and the crowd rose in anticipation as Tommy eyed up his target. He knew what he had to do, he knew his team needed him and with the hopes and the dreams of the parish on his shoulders, he let her fly … high … high … high into the air she flew dissecting the posts like … like … like something you dissect, and as the umpire waved the white flag to register the winner The Tommy saluted the frenzied crowd and he ran back to position chest-out peacock like.

The referee brought proceedings to a halt and just as we all remember singing “When Mick went up to lift the Sam Maguire, we were there” so too we can sing about where we were when Captain Marvel Tommy Owens shot the Kilmainhamwood JFC D to victory on a score line of 2:07 to 0:12.

Team : Johnny Carolan, Niall McCabe, Stephen Smith, Emmett Roche, Ronnie Owens, Jude Collins, Philip Reilly, Aidan Crosbie, Conor Kiernan, Damien Farrelly, Francis Owens, Benny Reilly, Tommy Owens (Capt.) Ray Magee, Damien Russell. Subs Colm Gilcreest for B. Reilly, Larry McCormack for D. Farrelly, Gary Yorke for R. Owens, David Dolan for P. Reilly
