B League Division 5

Drumbaragh 1-11

Kilmainhamwood 5-11
The last time these two sides met in this competition, was in the last group game of the 2015 competition when Drumbaragh disposed of Kilmainhamwood easily, to dash their hopes of promotion and a place in the final. So Kilmainhamwood has plenty to play for this time around, when they made the short trip over to Drumbaragh Tuesday evening last, the 31st of May. The evening itself was absolute perfect for this game, with the sun beaming and a slight breeze also present.
Kilmainhamwood took the field with a mix of youth in players like Paul Carolan, Cathal Bennett and Conor Kiernan and also had the option to call option experience when needed in the form of Colm Gilscreest, who was a senior winning medallist with the ‘Wood, all the way back in 1996.
Kilmainhamwood made a strong start to the game with two early goals from full-forward Paddy Carolan, these goals were followed up with points from Conor Kiernan, Cathal Bennett and David Russell. Paddy C also helped himself to two first-half points; to leave his personal tally at 2-02 in the first half.
But Kilmainhamwood did not have it easy either, the home side did enjoy a lot of first half possession, but could not take advantage of it, between wasteful shots and a good defence performance from the visitors, they kept Drumbaragh to just 0-03 points, to leave the ‘Wood leading by 8 at the break.
The goals kept coming for the ‘Wood in the second half, Paddy Carolan completed his hat trick, to take his tally to 3-02; Paul Carolan and Conor Kiernan also got in on the action with one a piece; three second half points from Russell and Kiernan; completed the scoring for the ‘Wood. But they did not have it all their own way in the second half as Drumbaragh did put up a better showing than the first as the registered 1-08. But the damage was already done, as the ‘Wood were more clinical in front of goals and ran out winners on a score line of 5-11 to 1-11.
Best for the ‘Wood were Niall Mc Cabe and Emmet Roache in defence, Gary Yorke in Midfield and Paddy Carolan and Conor Kiernan in attack.
Next for the Kilmainhamwood is a trip to Bellewstown for the Cup Quarter-Final verses Junior B side St. Vincent’s, fixed for Saturday the 4th of June, throw-in at 7.45 pm.

B League Division 5 5th May 2016
Kilmainhamwood 0-12 : 2-09 Moynalty
A depleted Kilmainhamwood side, suffered a narrow home defeat to neighbours Moynalty in this close B league encounter on Thursday last. The visitors opened the scoring but the ‘Wood soon equalised with an Aidan Crosbie point. The visitors then went on to kick three unanswered points before David Russell responded with his first two scores in quick succession.
Moynalty took control of the game when they pounced to score a goal in the 16th minute, Kilmainhamwood keeper, Padraig Carolan made a great save from the initial shot; but Moynalty were quicker to react to the re-bound to slid the ball into an empty Kilmainhamwood net despite the best efforts of the beaten keeper. The home team replied with another Crosbie point, just on the break of half time to leave the visitors leading by five at the break, 1-6 to 0-4.
Kilmainhamwood needed to up their performance in the second half, and introduced Paul Carolan and Conor Kiernan at half-time to strengthen the home sides attack, they got off to a great start when Gary Yorke pointed from a sweetly struck ‘45. This was soon followed up by another Aiden Crosbie point and a first from influential sub Conor Kiernan, to cut Moynalty’s lead to two. But the game was turned on its head once again when the visitors responded with a point, this was soon to be followed by a well worked goal to leave Moynalty six in front.
It would have been easy for the home team to buckle under the pressure but they fought back once again with two good scores from another substitute Paul Carolan and another from Russell, to cut the visitors lead back to four. The home team were making plenty of scoring chances but were unable to breach the Moynalty defence, to score that all important goal, which would have brought them right back into this match.
Moynalty surged forward to tap over two more important scores but these were cancelled out by another Kiernan brace. The game was finely poised for an exciting finish and the home team did create two goal scoring opportunities but their efforts were squandered by an impressive Moynalty defence. Moynalty would run out three point winners, on a scoreline of 2-09 to 0-12,
Best for the home team were Gary Yorke, Aidan Crosbie, Conor Kiernan and Stephen Smith.

Kilmainhamwood made their second trip of the year over to Slane for this Round 2 match in this years ‘B’ League, and again they followed suit from their first visit and ran out four point winners in what was a hard fought victory, played in what could be only described as dreadful conditions early on Sunday morning the 1st of March.
The ‘Wood made the better start and were 1-01 to no score up in the first ten minutes, thanks to two Micheal Berrill scores, corner-forward Berrill would do anything to get a score, and this was the case for Kilmainhamwood’s first effort on goal, as the ball came across the goal-mouth Berril used his cheek to divert the ball goalwards, and it worked, brimming with confidence, Berrill quickly followed suit and split the posts to register the ‘Woods first point. Slane now realised Berrill was a huge threat to their side and quickly changed their tactics to ensure the corner forward would no longer be a threat on goal for the rest of the game. Cathal Bennett quickly followed up with his first of the match to put the ‘Wood 1-02 to no score up. Slane did not take this quick start lying down and responded with a couple of efforts of their own, Slane continued to press the ‘Wood defence but they stood strong and great displays from Collins and Owens ensured the ‘Wood would go in level at half-time, 1-03 to 0-06.
Slane made the stronger start to the second half and registered the first couple of points from play, but the 'Wood kept fighting to stay in the match. A great team display from Kilmainhamwood left the side outscoring St. Pauls 2-10 to no score in the second half. Best for the ‘Wood was Niall McCabe and Jude Collins in defence and twins David and Damien Russell along with Cathal Bennett in attack.

‘B’ League Division 6 Round 1
Kilmainhamwood 3-15 : 0-04 St. Paul’s
Kilmainhamwood’s second team started the first round of this year’s “B” League, at home to St. Paul’s and ran out convincing winners on a score line of 3-15 to 0-04 points.
The match did not start out for the ‘Wood as easy as the score line would suggest. St. Paul’s made the long trip down the M3 and put a fight up to the North Meath side in the first half, with both teams registering point for point, it was not until full-forward, Paddy Clarke, on his first game for the ‘Wood, got a goal before the break to help Kilmainhamwood go into half time with a 1-5 to 0-04 point lead. Wing-forward Cathal Bennett and corner forward David Russell contributed the other points.
The ‘Wood made several changes in the first ten minutes of the second half with the introduction of Emmet Roache and Damien Farrelly in defence and Tommy Owens and Michael Berrill in attack. ‘B’ League Division 6 Round 6
Kilmainhamwood 4-09 : 2-21 Drumbaragh
A win for Kilmainhamwood in this ‘B’ League match would have put them right up there for the fight for promotion, but alas this was not to be as they ended up on the wrong side of a six point defeat, in what was a high scoring affair played in Drumbaragh Tuesday night last.
Kilmainhamwood started the match well but they could not make use of the possession as their first few efforts ended up wide, Drumbaragh responded well by registering their first couple of scores. The ‘Wood’s first came via centre-forward Francis Owens goal after a great team move from the ‘Wood. They went onto kick the next two scores to bring themselves back into the game. But it was Drumbaragh that finished the half stronger, by registering their fist goal, to go in at the break seven points up.
Kilmainhamwood started the match with a mix of youth and experience and some excellent displays from both veteran Colm Gilscreest, who straight from the throw-in brought the ‘Wood back into the match with a well taken goal to cut the Kells side lead to four and from youthful Cathal Bennet, whose efforts helped Kilmainhamwood get back to within one point of Drumbaragh midway through the second half, but Drumbaragh’s fitness started to show and they kicked on to run out six point winners and register 2-17 from play out of a total 2-21.
Best for the ‘Wood Colm Gilcreest, Francis Owens and Cathal Bennett.
K-Wood Team: Mark Kiernan, Philip Reilly, Bernerd Bennett, Martin Shields, Darren Owens, Jude Collins, Cathal Bennett, Michael Berrill, Damien Russell, Tommy Owens, Francis Owens, Colm Gilcreest, Damien Farrelly, Michael Clarke, Ray Magee
