Kilmainhamwood GFC U12 Squad : Sat 3rd Sept 2016 : Ciarán Crosby Tournament

Picture
Kilmainhamwood GFC U12 squad and management travelled to Meath Hill on Saturday 3rd September 2016 for the Ciarán Crosby tournament, more in hope than expectation, considering the strength of the teams taking part. So to be crowned champions at the end of the day puts a lovely gloss on what has been a tremendous year. The boys & girls from the ‘Wood were crowned champions of Group G of the Spring League in May and end the year with more well-deserved silverware. The weather threatened to dampen proceedings but credit to the Meath Hill grounds committee, the place was well presented.

Jason Cahill was the net-minder for the day and grabbed any ball that came his way. In the first game he saved four direct shots in the first half and was assured for the remainder of the day.

Kian Owens formed the corner-stone of a defense that meant business. In the second half of the first game Kian was out in front every time the opposition looked like they were going to mount a comeback and it was this bravery and commitment that helped ensure his teams passage into the final.

Jack Gillespie, aka Captain Fantastic donned the number 3 jersey and just like Diarmaid “The Rock” O’Sullivan from Cork, Jack was not to be moved. Any ball that ventured past midfield was simply belonging to Jack. His radar like positioning and strength on & off the ball, meant that nobody could get near his goal. Jack was presented with the cup at the end and thanked the tournament organizers and the teams that made it a great day.

Darragh Smith could grace any pitch, his speed off the mark and reading of the game are a joy to behold. Seamlessly switching between defense and attack and chipping in with the opening score of the day, Darragh was one of the main reasons the silverware is resident in Kilmainhamwood.

Eoin Finnegan had his best day in a Kilmainhamwood jersey. Deployed in a not too familiar role in the half-backs, Eoin adapted quickly and was soon on the front foot. He raided up & down the wing and supported his teammates in possession. All this despite getting a nasty knock in the warm-up that threatened to keep him out of the tournament. However, he displayed real steel and put in a truly wonderful performance all day.

Killian Russell put in another workmanlike performance í lar na páirce and covered every blade of grass. Killian won more than his fair share of dirty ball and anything that threatened the ‘Wood goal was driven right back from whence it came. Killian was the engine room of all things good on the day.

Rian Stafford was simply man of the match all day. Nine out of the teams total of eighteen points tells its own story. Gile, panache, balance, poise, commitment and plenty of skill to boot, Rian has it all. He wanted the ball all of the time, he wanted to score all of the time, he wanted to win all of the time … and he pretty much did.

Eoin Rooney was second top scorer and worked hard all day. He carried the ball through the opposition and his long range point taking was something that might be seen in Croke Park on the third Sunday in September in ten years’ time.

Noah Madden provided the link between midfield and attach. He kept moving all day and knew when to run into positions to keep the attack going. Noah bagged himself a well-deserved score to finish off the first game.

Cillian Bennett roamed between the full-forward and half-forward lines and got onto plenty of ball. Always with a keen eye for a score, Cillian helped himself to two vital scores and was involved in nearly all the important moves that brought the cup to the ‘Wood.

Ciara Finnegan at top of the right, was an ever-willing runner across the full forward line. Once she noticed an attack commencing, she was on her bike ready to assist. Always willing to work hard, Ciara can be very proud of her display on the day and all year.

Well done to Kilmainhamwood U12’s on a truly wonderful days football and a tremendous year.

Kilmainhamwood GFC U12 Squad : Group G Final v Nobber : 26.05.16

Picture
Kilmainhamwood GFC secured a unique treble on Thursday 26th May 2016 when the U12’s were crowned Group G champions following a tense and hard-earned victory over local rivals Nobber at Páirc Tailteann, Navan. The unique treble saw Kilmainhamwood GFC U12’s, U14’s & U16’s take home silverware in the preceding 7 days and exacerbated the need for a new trophy cabinet at the North Meath club.

All excited and nervous roads lead to Páirc Tailteann on a dry and bright, albeit slightly breezy, May evening. Despite the fact that Kilmainhamwood U12’s were without inspiration leader Jack Gillespie through injury, the men from the ‘Wood were determine to bring home the silverware for Jack who worked so hard all through the league campaign to get them to the final.

Killian Russell captained the side and won the toss and decided to play with the slight breeze. In the second minute Killian opened the scoring when he found the back of the net with a well-struck effort from distance following smart play from Cillian Bennett. Colin Plunkett was played in by Eoin Rooney and was unlucky to see an effort tail wide. In the sixth minute, in a role-reversal of the second minute, Cillian Bennett latched onto a Killian Russell pass and young Bennett slipped the ball under to on-rushing keeper to put the ‘Wood two points up … goals counts as one in U12’s.

However, in the 7th minute as Nobber piled on the pressure, the Kilmainhamwood defense needed to be at their strongest and most alert. Nobber raided down the stand-side of the pitch and were bearing in on goal when Ronan Cassidy bravely spread himself to block the bullet-like effort. Ronan took it full in the face but jumped back to his feet unperturbed. Nobber were gaining in confidence and establishing a foothold in the game around center-forward and deservedly opened their account to make it Kilmainhamwood 0-02 : 0-01 Nobber. Nobber followed this up with another score to level proceedings. Darragh Smith was moved from the Kilmainhamwood full-back line to the center-back position in an attempt to stem the tide of Nobber attack. Darraghs performance from then until the final whistle was one of the main reasons the Group G cup is now resident in Kilmainhamwood. He showed experience and calmness beyond his years, he showed cleverness and footballing intelligence that cannot be coached, and a bravery and a willingness to put in the hard yard that are a credit to him. Darraghs positional swap with Eoin Rooney was also key to how the new-look full-back line operated with Eoin joining the tight-man-marker Kian Owens in shutting out the Nobber attack. Eoin brought strength and pace to the Kilmainhamwood square that was needed, and then some, especially in the last ten minutes when the game was in the melting pot. Kian Owens was rock-solid all day and prevented his marker from getting anymore that one or two touches all game.

In the goals, Max Farrelly was ever vigilant but unfortunately for him, a foot injury in the 12th minute ended his afternoon. Noah Madden sprung from the bench with all the energy of a young kid goat and was only too delighted to enter the fray and don the goalkeepers jersey. Noah settled well to his task and kept the Nobbermen at bay.

At midfield & center-forward Killian Russell and Rian Stafford alternated all game. The two lads performed very intelligently as both management teams tried to counteract the oppositions main threats. Colin Plunkett at full-forward was using his strength to great effect to gather possession and laid-off umpteen passes to the always-available Eoin Finnegan. In the 20th minute, as half time approached, Rian played a lovely one-two with the ever-alert and full-of-running Cillian Bennett, before swinging a lovely left footer “thar an trasnan” to put his team one point to the good. In the added minute of the first half Rian latched onto a Killian Russell pass and was fouled. Rian duly split the posts from the resultant free to leave the half-time score reading Kilmainhamwood 0-04 : 0-02 Nobber.

As the second half started, all supporters present knew that this game would go down to the wire and that either side could emerge victorious. Kilmainhamwood started well and in the 2nd minute of the half, full-forward Colin Plunkett was out in front again and, following clever interplay from Cillian Bennett and Eoin Finnegan, rattled the onion bag to give his side the best start to the half. In the 5th minute Rian Stafford raised another while flag following a good team score involving Killian Russell, Darragh Smith and Eoin Finnegan to make it Kilmainhamwood 0-06 : 0-02 Nobber. For the next 8 minutes Nobber dominated proceedings and rattled off two scores to make it a two point game. During this time Killian Russell, Rian Stafford and Darragh Smith lead the Kilmainhamwood charge and raised their game to the level required to become champions. Rian Stafford popped over another to keep the scoreboard ticking before Nobber kept in touch with a score of the their own to leave the scoreboard reading Kilmainhamwood 0-07 : 0-05 Nobber. Mid-way through the second half, the ever-more influential Darragh Smith broke through and extended the ‘Woods lead with a well-deserved score. Nobber responded with a score of the own to narrow the gap.

As the game entered the final 5 minutes, Kilmainhamwood were awarded a free and Rian Stafford stepped up to take it from the right-hand-side of the pitch, which suited his trusty left foot. However, in a bizarre turn of events Rian threw the ball to Cillian Bennett, who dropped the free short into the goalkeepers hands. Nobber took the kick-out quickly, as they had done all day, and broke up the field at pace and reduced the deficit to the minimum. It turns out, on analysis after the game, that the referee had instructed Rian Stafford that the free had to be taken by Cillian Bennett, as he was the one that was fouled. All’s well that ends well, but it was strange at the time.

There was still loads of time left in the game for either side to win it and Kilmainhamwood dug deep as the fingernail-biting began. Noah Madden in the goals was alert to all dangers and grabbed a vital ball near the end. Kian Owens stuck to his task manly as the Nobber onslaught arrived. Eoin Rooney was magnificent all game but especially in the last minutes when his team needed him. Eoin read two very important plays and intercepted them and walked out through a wall of Nobber men to help lift the siege . Ronan Cassidy stood strong like a brickhouse and there was no getting through, he shouldered lads out of his way to gain possession and ensured he grabbed the ball and setup another attack. Killian Russell covered every blade of grass and lead by example, showing the leadership that was needed in the white-heat of battle. Eoin Finnegan didn’t stop running all day and was the link between defense and attack. Eoin has been one of the top scorers all year and contributed handsomely to the eventual victory. Colin Plunkett produced his best game of year, he was out in front for every ball, he caught ball over his head, under his feet and everywhere in between. He laid off the ball to on-rushing teammates where it was required and he turned his man and shot for scores when the opportunity arose, an all-round great game. Darragh Smith put in a superb shift and can be very proud of his display. However, as the game entered the closing stage, it was left to Rian Stafford to seal the deal. After battling hard to gain possession, Rian was fouled by the Nobber defense, he settled himself and sailed over the insurance point to send the frenzied crowd into raptures and as captain Killian Russell accepted the cup, the feeling was that there wouldn’t be a cow milked in the ‘Wood until Tuesday.

This was a wonderful team effort when everyone shining at different times in the game. The subs bench consisted of Grace Keogan, Ciara Finnegan, Ella Armstrong and Jason Cahill and they were fully supportive all day. They are very much part of this team and contributed the whole way through the league campaign. The management and team can be very proud of themselves because this was one tough final. Credit to Nobber for never giving up and working right to the end. Kilmainhamwood GFC U12 Squad : Group G Semi-Final v Moynalty : 24.05.2016

Picture
Kilmainhamwood GFC U12’s booked their place in the U12 Football League Group G final when the overcame a resolute and stubborn Moynalty side in the semi-final on Tuesday 24th May 2016 at a beautifully appointed Kilmainhamwood on a sunny and warm May evening.

Captain Killian Russell lead his team into this semi-final encounter and in the second minute, leading by example, he drove into the heart of the Moynalty defense before releasing Cillian Bennett who in-turn found the on-rushing Eoin Finnegan and the flying half-forward split the posts to give Kilmainhamwood the perfect start. Moynalty promptly equalized in the third minute. In the sixth minute the ever-alert Eoin Rooney picked up another breaking ball from midfield and powered through the middle to slot over his first point of the game. In fact Eoin Rooney was dominating the whole middle third of the pitch and released Killian Russell to give the ‘Wood a 0-03 : 0-01 lead. Cillian Bennett was unlucky not to extend his teams lead after great work from Rian Stafford. In the tenth minute Darragh Smith rose like a phoenix from the flames to secure a wonderful catch from the clouds before playing in Eoin Rooney to make it 0-05 : 0-03 to the home side.

Midway through the first half Ciara Finnegan replaced Grace Keogan and both girls tackled their hearts out and made huge contributions to the victory. Noah Madden replaced Ciara Finnegan as the half drew to a close and he was unlucky not to open his account with an opportunist effort. Eoin Rooney was putting on a master class at half-back and raided forward at every opportunity and, with Rian Stafford was becoming increasing more influential, securing a fifth point for the ‘Wood with a lovely angled left footer, it looked like the ‘Wood might have it easy. However, the tide turned for a while and Moynalty were beginning to enjoy a purple patch. Kian Owens and Ronan Cassidy were working hard along with Darragh Smith to stem the tide, however, the Tidy Towns visitors managed two scores to leave it even-steven, 0-05 : 0-05 at the interval.

The second half began much the same as the first half with Eoin Finnegan opening the scoring in the first minute from a free he won himself. The second half was quickly becoming the Rian Stafford show as he ran through the Moynalty defence on a regular basis. In the fourth minute of the second half Rian was unlucky with a long range effort following good support play from Colin Plunkett and Cillian Bennett. In the sixth minute he found his radar following good support from Eoin Finnegan and Noah Madden. In the 11th minute Rian setup midfield partner Killian Russell but the man from Boynagh was unlucky to see his effort drift wide. Rian Stafford rattled off four points without reply from the 14th to the 18th minute of the second half to give Kilmainhamwood a commanding 0-12 : 0-06 lead.

It wasn’t as plain sailing as it sounds and Darragh Smith and Kian Owens in the full back line had plenty of work to do but acquitted themselves with great aplomb and can be very proud of their performance on the night. In the goals Max Farrelly was alert to all danger and left his goals a few times in the second half to clear his lines. At half-back Ronan Cassidy was proving an immovable force as he batten down the hatches on any Moynalty attack. I lar na páirc, bhí Killian Russell agus Rian Stafford iontach ar fad an lá. Half-forwards Cillian Bennett and Eoin Finnegan never stopped running and tackling and provided the required outlets for their team. Colin Plunkett put in a great shift and occupied both full-backs and the goalie while Grace Keogan, Ciara Finnegan and Noah Madden alternated as his full-forward partner. Ella Armstrong was introduced late on and did very well.

As the end of the game approached, Noah Madden helped himself to two opportune and skillful scores. The first was a rebound from the crossbar and despite the imposing shadow of the on-rushing goalie, young Madden displayed a slight of foot and agility, as he wrong-footed the hapless keeper. His second was ever better as he dummied the flailing keeper and turned to hit the back of the onion bag with the goalkeeper trailing in his wake. As full-time approached it was apt the Rian Stafford would have the last word … after being clothes-lined with a high tackle, he got up, shock himself down and slotted over the resultant free from an acute angle and a hellava way out to complete and well deserved 0-15 : 0-06 victory.

Attention now turns to the final which is on this Thursday 26th May 2016 at 6:15pm in Páirc Tailteann, Navan against local rivals Nobber. Please come along to support the boys. Kilmainhamwood GFC U12 Squad : Saturday May 7th 2016 : Nobber Match

Picture
Kilmainhamwood U12 squad made the short journey to take on neighbours Nobber in the last game in Group G of the 2016 Spring League. This 8-a-side game that was entertaining and enthralling from start to finish with the boys & girls from the ‘Wood prevailing on a score line of Kilmainhamwood 0-21 : 015 Nobber.

Captain Rian Stafford lead his team into battle but it was Nobber who opened the scoring in the first minute. Kilmainhamwood midfield star Killian Russell restored parity for the ‘Wood with the first of his six points from play in the second minute. Goalkeeper for the day Eoin Finnegan launched a big ball into the breeze and it carried well over midfield and into the opposition half putting his team on the front foot. From the resultant attack, Kilmainhamwood took the lead in the third minute when a Darragh Smith free kick was punched over the bar by the ever-alert Colin Plunkett. In early frantic exchanges, Nobber rattled off two quick point to regain the lead and lads from the ‘Wood knew they were in a contest.

In the fourth minute Eoin Rooney leveled matter at 0-03 : 0-03 with a well taken free which he won himself following a lovely pass from Jack Gillespie.  With five minutes on the clock Killian Russell powered through the middle and landed a long distance beauty to put the ‘Wood a point to the good and when Darragh Smith slotted one over following good work from Killian Russell & Kian Owens it looked like Kilmainhamwood might kick-on and wrap this one up early. However, credit to Nobber, they never gave up and three point without reply saw them take the lead 0-05 to 0-06. Killian Russell once again drew his team level before Nobber edged ahead as they grabbed what was to be their last score of the first half. Great work from Jack Gillespie & Kian Owens in defense and two points from Killian Russell, one each from Rian Stafford and Darragh Smith meant that the ‘Wood lead at half-time on a score line of 0-10 : 0-07.

The second half began much as the first half began with Killian Russell landing a wonderful long range point following good work from Rian Stafford and Kian Owens. Ronan Cassidy was introduced and steadied up the Kilmainhamwood defense for the remainder of the game. Darragh Smith got in on the action again following another great kick out from Eoin Finnegan. In the fifth minute of the second half Rian Stafford broke through and cleverly hand-passed over the bar to make it 0-13 : 0-08 in favour of the men in white. Rian was again on the end of a great move involving Eoin Rooney and Killian Russell. Nobber scored themselves before Eoin Rooney kept the score board ticking with a well-deserved point. Substitute Cillian Bennett grabbed his first score after being released by Killian Russell before young Bennett turned provider for Eoin Rooney, who edged the ‘Wood further ahead. A short kick-out was seized upon by the ever vigilant Darragh Smith who returned it with interest from distance into an empty net to give Kilmainhamwood a 0-18 : 0-10 lead with 10 minutes to play and what looked like an unassailable lead.

However, as mentioned early, Nobber to their credit never gave up and three well-taken points brought them right back into contention. Darragh Smith put pay to any thoughts of a comeback when he finished to the net again before Rian Stafford split the posts following good work from Killian Russell and Cillian Bennett. Ciara Finnegan, Noah Madden and Jason Cahill were introduced late on and worked hard for the team. Darragh Smith completed the scoring or the ‘Wood and Nobber tagged on a point to leave it Kilmainhamwood 0-21 : 015 Nobber.

Another wonderful team performance that leaves Kilmainhamwood U12’s sitting pretty on top of group G with 5 wins out of 5 and looking forward to the final. Kilmainhamwood GFC U12 Squad : Saturday 23rd April 2016 : Oldcastle Match

Picture
Kilmainhamwood GFC U12 made the 40-minute cross-county journey to Millbrook, Oldcastle on Saturday 23rd April 2016 to take on their joint-table-toppers in a shoot-out of the big guns on a sunny but windy mid-Spring Day. Sunday 24th April 2016 might be census night but today the U12 men & women from the ‘Wood stood up to be counted and came away with a hard-earned, well-deserved, truly-gritty, often-pretty, more-often-tough one point 0-06 : 0-05 victory to ensure that they are sitting pretty at the top of Group G.

Captain (Fantastic, and he was fantastic, more of that anon) Darragh Smith won the coin-toss and elected to play with the very significant wind. The throw-up was keenly contested by regular mid-fielder Killian Russell and stand in mid-fielder Eoin Rooney but Oldcastle launched an early raid on the Kilmainhamwood defense. Indicative of was to ensue, man-mountain Jack Gillespie rose like a phoenix from the flames and plucked the in-coming missile from the clouds and set Eoin Rooney on his way who found Killian Russell advancing on the half-way line. Killian powered forward eating up the ground and let one fly from a good 40 yards out and, ably abetted by the strong wind and a bounce in front of the keeper, he got the ‘Wood off the make with just a minute on the clock.

The next 10 or 12 minutes were tight and tough with quarter neither given nor received. Darragh Smith was brilliant in the full-back line with the aforementioned Jack Gillespie holding firm. Half-back Kian Owens was switched in the first 5 minutes to mark the Oldcastle “runner” in the half-forwards and he stuck to his task with gusto while Ronan Cassidy dug-in deep as the other half-back and secured plenty of ball which he turned into attack.

At mid-field Killian Russell was dominating for the ‘Wood and as Eoin Rooney tired, Eoin Finnegan slotted in for a while to assist young Russell. At half-forward Cillian Bennett was winning more ball that his stature might suggested but with his lion-heart and silky skills he provided a valuable outlet. On 15 minutes full-forward Colin Plunkett made it 0-02 to 0-00 when he neatly finished off a great move started by full-backs Darragh Smith and Jack Gillespie. Noah Madden was unlucky to see an effort go wide when he pulled on a bouncing ball and Grace Keogan was completing hard for everything that broke and tackling like a true professional.

As half-time approached, Eoin Finnegan slotted over a third point without reply following good work by Noah Madden and Grace Keogan. Oldcastle registered their first score of the match on the stroke of half-time to mean that the ‘Wood went into the interval leading 0-03 : 0-01

As the second half started everyone present knew that the significant wind and the size and quality (in fairness) of the Oldcastle team was going to make this a long half. A two point lead didn’t seem like enough but this Kilmainhamwood U12 team is special. Ciara Finnegan in goals was the foundation of the second half display, she made a few wonderful saves, none more so than the long ball over the top that started a sequence of events that was to epitomize the resolution of the Kilmainhamwood defense. After making her wonderful save, the ball broke to an on-rushing Oldcastle attacker who, with only a brave, standing-tall Ciara Finnegan to beat, smashed it against the K-wood crossbar. The rebound broke to an Oldcastle forward again who shot from close range, however, the immovable force that is Jack Gillespie threw his body on the line to block a certain goal. When the ball broke again to Oldcastle the whole defense converged on his to ensure he kicked it wide and everyone breathed a sigh of relief.

However, the Oldcastle pressure became to pay dividend and 8 minutes into the second half they scored their second point and on 11 minutes their third to level things up and on 13 they took the lead. At this stage it looked like the ‘Wood had ran out of steam and would have to succumb to their illustrious neighbors. But nobody told this to Darragh Smith when he moved to mid-field with 10 or 12 minutes to go and his team a point down. Darragh showed his true class and dominated the remainder of the game. He slotted in seamlessly with work-horse Killian Russell and together they drove their team forward.

Kilmainhamwood looked to have been dealt a hammer blow when superstar Jack Gillespie was carried from the field with what looked like a nasty ankle injury. Eoin Rooney moved back to the full back line and Kian Owens and Ronan Cassidy dug deep and found new levels of energy that even they didn’t think they had. 14 minutes into the second half and Darragh Smith made another marauding run through the heart of the Oldcastle and sharp-shooter Eoin Finnegan was on-hand to split the posts to level the match 0-04 : 0-04 with a quarter of the match to go. Oldcastle edged ahead once again before the always-busy Killian Russell and now-dominating Darragh Smith combined to setup livewire Eoin Finnegan to level proceedings with five minutes to go.

Then, in a miraculous, Lazarus-esque turn of events, Jack Gillespie returned to the field of play and one could sense the inspiration as this Kilmainhamwood team knew that victory was in their sights. With Ciara Finnegan protecting the goals and Eoin Rooney dropping deep to protect the house and Jack Gillespie back on the field and Kian Owens running strong to the end and Ronan Cassidy bossing his way around and Killian Russell covering every blade of grass and Cillian Bennett foraging for every ball and Colin Plunket putting in an admirable shift and Grace Keogan punching away above her weight and Noah Madden working his socks off and Eoin Finnegan scoring escapades … it all came down to the man of the moment Darragh Smith, as he sliced through the Oldcastle defense with great poise and dexterity, with coolness personified and as nonchalant as you like, he landed the winning score to give the Kilmainhamwood GFC U12 their best win to date on a scoreline of Kilmainhamwood 0:06 0:05 Oldcastle.

Kilmainhamwood GFC U12 Squad : Saturday 16th April 2016 : Moynalty Match

Picture
Kilmainhamwood GFC U12 squad made the short trip to their North Meath neighbours Moynalty for this re-fixed first round game in Group G. Captain Kian Owens handed the teamsheet to the referee and went in for the coin-toss and lead his team into battle.

Killian Russell opened the scoring for Kilmainhamwood in the 2nd minute when he powered through the middle and landed a well taken long-range effort following good work from Eoin Rooney, Ronan Cassidy and Kian Owens. In the 4th Eoin Finnegan doubled the K-wood lead after Kian Owens won a great ball in his own half and set Eoin free. Once again Kian Owens was in the right place at the right time and setup Cillian Bennett for a third point for the ‘Wood in 6th minute. Moynalty opened their account in the 8th minute to make it 0-03 to 0-01 in favour of the men in white.

In the 9th minute Rian Stafford got his name on the scoreboard following some determined play. A minute later Rian turned provider for Eoin Rooney to become the fifth K-wood man to summon the umpire into a white flag wave motion with a sublime finish. In the 12th minute Cillian Bennett was fouled and slotted over the resultant free. After 13 minutes Jack Gillespie, Kian Owens and Killian Russell combined to setup Rian Stafford for his second and his teams 7th point. Killian Russell split the posts for his second point and Colin Plunkett got in on the scoring act with a well-deserved point. Grace Keogan replaced Ronan Cassidy, Ella Armstrong replaced Cillian Bennett and Ciara Finnegan replaced Colin Plunkett and they all fitted seamlessly into the team plan. Noah Madden in the goals and Darragh Smith in front of him were in fine form and setup many attacks as Eoin Finnegan (2) and Rian Stafford (3) ensured that Kilmainhamwood lead 0-14 to 0-01 at half-time.

Hailstones started to fall as the second half began and the referee sensibility decided to allow both teams take shelter in the dugouts until the inclement weather passed over. Once the game did resume, Rian Stafford extended the lead for the ‘Wood before Noah Madden was called into action in the goals and produced a fine save.

Management swapped the midfield pairing of Killian Russell and Rian Stafford with full-back pairing of Darragh Smith and Jack Gillespie and the two new midfielders dominated the remaining of the half with Darragh scoring three points and Jack bagging two ably assisted by Ciara Finnegan and Grace Keogan. Moynalty finished with a flurry and got a consolation point but with a final scoreline of Kilmainhamwood 0-20 : 0-02 Moynalty the men from the ‘Wood sit proudly on top of Group G.

This was a real team effort with everyone contributing handsomely. Attention now switches to top of the table clash with Oldcastle next week. Kilmainhamwood GFC U12 Squad : Saturday 9th April 2016 : Carnaross Match

Picture
Kilmainhamwood U12’s continued their fine form on Saturday 9th April 2016 when they recorded a well-deserved 0:15 to 0:03 victory over Carnaross at an even softer and soggier than last week, but well appointed, Kilmainhamwood.

Captain Jack Gillespie won the toss and elected to play against the elements with the ‘Wood defending the goals nearest the dressing rooms. Kilmainhamwood started strongly against a very good Carnaross team and the opening encounters were tough but fair. Great work from Ciara Finnegan salvaged the ball from the Carnaross defense before she impishly moved it onto brother Eoin Finnegan who split the posts for the opening score of the game much to the delight of the home crowd. Killian Russell was dominating midfield and spraying intelligent passes around to the willing runners in the forward line. Eoin Rooney skillfully stroked a loose ball over the bar as it rolled along the ground to put the ‘Wood two points to the good after five minutes. Carnaross didn’t lie down and tackled hard for everything. They got their just rewards as they registered their first score after about seven minutes. The ensuing ten minutes was tough, hard, fair, North Meath football with no quarter was asked or given as the two heavyweights slugged it out. No scores were produced during this period but it was entertaining stuff with Jack Gillespie and Kian Owens rock solid at the back and Noah Madden lively in the goals to sweep up anything that came in over the defense.

As halftime approached the classy men from Kilmainhamwood stretched out their advantage. Livewire Eoin Finnegan was on hand to pop over a beauty following some great work from powerhouse Killian Russell. Darragh Smith sauntered up from the fullback line to fire the ball into the back of the onion bag with a long range speculative effort after great work from Cillian Bennett and Colin Plunkett. Eoin Finnegan finished the half with a long range post-splitter following a strong solo run to give Kilmainhamwood a 0:05 to 0:01 halftime lead.

As the second half started Eoin Finnegan continued where he left off with a goal and a point following strong play from Ronan Cassidy, Cillian Bennett, Colin Plunkett and Ciara Finnegan. Carnaross struck back with a goal of their own as they fought hard to stay in the contest. Killian Russell continued to hoover up anything that moved around the middle of the field and bagged himself a beautiful point to put more distance between Kilmainhamwood and their illustrious opponents.

Darragh Smith, Jack Gillespie, Kian Owens and Ronan Cassidy were working well as a defensive unit and setup ace marksman Eoin Finnegan for another point before Colin Plunkett registered his first score. With ten minutes to go, Kilmainhamwood management introduced Grace Keogan for Ciara Finnegan who had foraged and scrapped admirably all day. Ella Armstrong replaced full forward Colin Plunkett and then swapped with Noah Madden in the goals with young Madden heading up to the forwards to wreak havoc on the opposition.

The ‘Wood were in fine flowing form and finding their men at will and further scores from Killian Russell (0:02), Darragh Smith and Cillian Bennett (1:02) ensured that the ‘Wood men in white and blue brought home the laurels and made it two wins out of two. Best for the ‘Wood were Killian Russell, Kian Owens, Eoin Finnegan, Jack Gillespie, Darragh Smith and Cillian Bennett.

Team: 1. Noah Madden, 2. Darragh Smith, 4. Jack Gillespie, 5. Kian Owens, 7. Ronan Cassidy, 8. Killian Russell, 9. Eoin Rooney, 10. Eoin Finnegan, 12. Cillian Bennett, 06. Ciara Finnegan, 15. Colin Plunkett. Subs: 11. Ella Armstrong for C. Plunkett, 13. Grace Keogan for C. Finnegan

Kilmainhamwood GFC U12 squad had their long awaited first game in football league when they welcomed Syddan to the ‘Wood on a soft and soggy Saturday 2nd April 2016. They ran out comfortable winners in the end on a score line of Kilmainhamwood 2-14 : 0-00 Syddan but it was a more competitive game that the score line suggests.

Captain Killian Russell won the toss and elected to play into the hill and the ‘Wood were soon up & running as Rian Stafford dominated early proceedings. Rian registered the first three points as he picked up every ball that came his way. Rian could have had 6 or 8 points scored in the first ten minutes but for some uncharacteristic wayward shooting. Midfield partner Killian Russell was ably assisting Rian and got in on the scoring act with a fine long range point midway through the first half. Half forward Cillian Bennett and Eoin Rooney then grabbed a few well deserved scores with Colin Plunkett and Eoin Finnegan also raising white flags. Grace Keogan and Max Farrelly were working hard up front too and when Ella Armstrong replaces Miss Keogan, she continued the good work.

The first half scoring was possible because of excellent defending and delivery by Cian Owens, Ciara Finnegan, Darragh Smith and Jack Gillespie. Cian was outstanding in the first half and the tough training that he’s been doing since before Christmas is certainly paying off as he put in a near man-of-the-match performance. Darragh & Jack in the full back line were rock solid as expected, sweeping up anything that came their way and launching many attacks. Ciara Finnegan came into the team at the last minute and can be extremely proud of her performance. Her brother Eoin alongside her was always available, running up & down the field and covering more ground that anyone.

All this good work in the first half meant that the ‘Wood had a 0-09 : 0-00 half time lead.
Grace Keogan started the second half in place of Ella Armstrong with Ella replacing Grace again midway through the second half. Both girls can be very happy with their days performance. Rian Stafford started the second half as he did the first with a few wonderful scores and a few wayward wides … shooting practise this week Rian!!
Management made a few changes to freshen things up so midfield pairing of Rian Stafford and Killian Russell swapped with full back pairing of Darragh Smith and Jack Gillespie. Noah Madden came out of the goals in a swap with Max Farrelly with young Madden going up front. The next two scores rolled back time with some slick interplay between Owens, Russell, Stafford and finished with some aplomb by Madden. Cillian Bennett helped himself to a well-deserved goal before Darragh Smith also found the net. Jack Gillespie finished off the scoring with a wonderful long range point.

All in all the boys and girls can be very proud of themselves following a wonderful well-discipline display.

Kilmainhamwood GFC U12 Squad: U12 Football League vs. Wolfe Tones : Sat 18/04/15

Picture
Kilmainhamwood GFC U12's travelled to Gibbstown on Saturday 18th April 2015 to take on a well-organized Wolfe Tones and were unlucky to be on the wrong side of a 0-08 : 0:07 result

Captain Cian Gillespie won the toss and elected to play with the significant wind. Wolfe Tones opened the scoring before Kilmainhamwood center-back John McCreevy registered the opening score for his side as he powered through the middle and intelligently used the wind to sail over a beauty from distance.

Cian Gillespie finished off a good move with a well-taken point as the 'Wood were making good use of the strong breeze. It was a very entertaining game as both sides traded scores with Rian Stafford popping over a couple and Oisin Reilly also getting in on the action. At half time the sides were level with six points apiece.

Kilmainhamwood had to change tactics as they now faced into the aforementioned breeze and kicked the ball lower and harder to counteract the elements. Rian Stafford who nearly every kickout in a pre-planned tactic and sent the ball up the wing to a teammate. Jack Gillespie moved to mid-field and ran his socks off. Killian Russell was alert to every ball and swept-up when necessary and Darragh Smith was snuffed out any danger too.

The second half was very keenly contested with very low scoring. The 'Wood only scored once with Killian Russell scoring a goal from distance, however, Wolfe Tones managed two points near the end to snatch the victory despite the best efforts from the gallant men from the 'Wood.

Team : Chloe Reilly, Darragh Smith, Jack Gillespie, Killian Russell, John McCreevy, Oisin Reilly, Kian Gillespie, Rian Stafford, Eoin Rooney, Sheena O'Donnell, Anna Cunningham, Max Farrelly

Subs: Sean Bennett for A. Cunningham, Cillian Bennett for M. Farrelly

Kilmainhamwood GFC U12 Squad : U12 Football League vs. Syddan : Sun 22/03/15

Picture
Kilmainhamwood got their 2015 U12 league campaign off to the perfect start with a thoroughly deserved 0-17 : 0-02 victory over Syddan on Sunday 22nd March 2015 in lovely sunny conditions at well-appointed Syddan.

The ‘Wood started brightly and raced into an early lead. Kian Gillespie opened the scoring with a great run and finish from midfield. John McGreevy powered through the centre to slot over a lovely score. Rian Stafford chipped over a beauty following good work from his cousin John McGreevy. Oisin Reilly finished a lovely team move that involved Killian Russell, Povilas Cesiunas and Eoin Rooney. Eoin Rooney then got his name on the scoreboard with a long ranger. Sean Bennett split the posts when un-erring accuracy after good work from Sheena O’Donnell. Syddan then registered their only point of the first half but normal service was resumed when Oisin Reilly supplied Eoin Rooney with a great pass and Eoin duly converted. The score of the match was started when full-back Jack Gillespie plucked one from the sky and played a one-two with Killian Russell who found Cian Gillespie who played in the ever-elusive Sean Bennett, who jigged left and right before dispatching a daisy-cutter to the bottom left-hand corner. Eoin Rooney and Cian Gillespie finished the half with a points each to give Kilmainhamwood a comfortable 12 : 01 half time lead.

The second half was a much more difficult affair as Syddan increased the intensity and Kilmainhamwood were wasteful as they notched up nine wides (compared to one wide in the first half). Rian Stafford did get the scoreboard moving with a clinical finish after good work from Sean Bennett. Oisin Reilly then helped himself to a good point following good work from Cian Gillespie. Then Syddan scored their only point on the second half but when Jack Gillespie moved to midfield and his probing run culminated with a fine score. Max Farrelly was introduced and made an immediate impact as he finished to the back of the net. Killian Russell rounded off the scoring by registering a powerful point that his display merited.

Colin Plunkett had a great game in the goals and was alert to nearly every ball that was popped over the top … he was quick off his line and snuffed out any opposition threat.

Jack Gillespie was rock-solid at full back and soared into the bright sunshine on more than one occasion to secure primary position and on his return to terra firma was the launch pad for the ensuing attacks.

Povilas Cesiunas was tigerish in everything he did all day, he hassled and harried and blocked and hooked like a man that was determine to prevent the opposition from advancing.

Killian Russell added a cut & dash to the halfback line, he picked up a lot of loose ball and drove into the heart of the Syddan defence bagging himself a well-deserved point late on.

John McGreevy was the rock that the entire performance was built on, he used his power and ability to dominate the centerback position and steamrolled forward when the opportunity presented itself and contributed a wonderful point during one of his escapades.

Oisin Reilly delivered a workmanlike performance and linked defence with attack. He notched up two well-taken points from play during the course of proceedings.

Cian Gillespie covered every blade of grass on the pitch and was part of nearly every good move that the ‘Wood put together and bagged himself two points.

Eoin Rooney was at his brilliant best for most of the game and contributed three points from play.

Rian Stafford was always available as an outlet and his clever runs and support play meant he was a constant menace to the opposition defence and his three points were well earned.

Sean Bennett lead the line was pointed to where he wanted the ball which, once secured, meant danger for the opposing team. 1-2 was a handsome return for a solid display.

Sheena O’Donnell again played very well and grabbed any ball that came close to her. She make the final pass for a number of scores and can be very satisfied and proud of her display.

Max Farrelly when introduced ensured that the full-backs were on their toes but he managed to elude them to rattle the onion bag for his customary goal.

Kian Owens was drafted in to revitalise the full forward line and got stuck in from his introduce.

Chloe Reilly was brought on near the end to tighten up the ‘Wood defence to guarantee that the victory was secured.

Cillian Bennett got a run and nearly got himself on the scoresheet

2012 U12 Semi-final : Kilmainhamwood 2-09 Ballinalough 2-02

Picture
The Kilmainhamwood Gfc U12’s recorded a superb well-earned victory in the semi-final against Ballinalough on Wed 30th May 2012 in a well appointed home pitch.

The game started at a frantic pace with midfield duo Adam Crosbie & Declan Reilly to the fore ... however, the "twin-towers" were off target with their opening efforts. The ‘Wood continued to make chances with inside forwards Padraig Gilsean and Callum Crosbie a constant threat. Then, against the run of play, and like a bolt out of the blue, Ballinalough landed 1-02 in quick succession. Credit must be give to the Kilmainhamwood men as they regained their composure with full-back’s Niall Bennett and Jamie Fagan steadying the ship. The ‘Wood were getting into their stride but it looked like it might not be their day when Callum Crosbie and Niall Conlon both were uncharacteristically off target. However, this team is not for lying down, and when things got tough the tough got going ... started with a wonderful goal from midfield dynamo Declan Reilly. This was followed by points from Adam & Callum Crosbie and a brace from the impressive Niall Conlon following great support play from half-back pairing of David Carolan and Dean Carolan. The ‘Wood took a 1-04 to 1-02 half time lead into the break and a well-earned rest.

The second half started as the first finished … at a frantic pace. Adam Crosbie stretched Kilmainhamwoods lead with a lovely point following great work from David Carolan. Lovely interplay between Dean Carolan and Callum Crosbie setup Declan Reilly to split the posts from range. Killian Shields in the K-wood goals then had to be on his toes to tip wide in a one on one situation. Ballinalough did up the ante and were putting the K-wood backs under increasing pressure which eventually resulted in a goal leaving the minimum between them at 1-06 to 2-02. But this team has character and no little talent and when Adam Crosbie feed Niall Conlon and Niall Bennett feed Brian Cassidy, the two half-forwards made no mistake and took their chances. Brian Cassidy battled hard all game and was beginning to reap the rewards of his hard work as he skilfully put Adam Crosbie in for a goal. Callum Crosbie rounded off the scoring with a lovely point after more mastery from Niall Conlon to see Kilmainhamwood finish victors on 2-09 to 2-02.

This was a great team effort so no need to pick out who was the best as they were all wonderful

Kilmainhamwood : Killian Shields, Jamie Fagan, Niall Bennett, David Carolan, Dean Carolan, Declan Reilly, Adam Crosbie, Brian Cassidy, Niall Conlon, Padraig Gilsean, Callum Crosbie. Subs : Keith Reilly for P. Gilsean.

The final of this U12 competition is tonight (Friday 1st June) in nobber at 7pm ... please come along and support the team.
